Old Santa Fe Trail Traditions

The Old Santa Fe Trail was a historic trading route for the Indigenous people of the Americas. Runners carried precious items such as turquoise from the Cerrillos Hills and bird feathers from South America, from one end of the continent all the way up into Canada. Later the route was used by European trappers, then traders and settlers from the 18th century into today. At the entrance to Museum Hill is a magnificent sculpture commemorating the people that built the Trail.

Santa Fe was an important stop along the route, offering travelers rest, lodging, food and culture, as it does still today. The Trail ends in the heart of Santa Fe, the Plaza; a lively gathering place for locals and visitors. Today the Old Santa Fe Trail is primarily residential, with a broad range of homes; from grand estates to adobe casitas. They all reside together, randomly along the Trail, which lends to the character and beauty of our diverse community. Homes for sale currently range from $800,000 to almost $10,000,000.

Some of my favorite lunch breaks are the outstanding food trucks on the corner of Old Santa Fe Trail and Paseo de Peralta. Across the street is the renowned Kaune’s gourmet grocery and deli on the other corner. You are steps from dozens of restaurants and Canyon Road galleries. The living heartbeat of Santa began on the Trail hundreds of years ago along this historic trail and is alive and well still today.

Home Blessing, A Very Special Gift for Your Home: July 21–August 5

Every home has a history, it’s your sanctuary and your place to rest. If you wish to honor your home with a blessing, a group of Tibetan monks will be visiting Santa Fe, praying, creating a mandala sand painting, and doing private home blessings. It’s a powerful and beautiful experience of a lifetime, in addition to supporting their work with the Dahli Lama in India. They are available for house blessings, and any other private blessings or events, from July 21 through August 5. Please contact harmon@clearlightbooks.com for more information.

“A true home is one of the most sacred of places.
It is a sanctuary into which men flee from the world’s perils and alarms.
It is the place where love learns its lessons,
where life is schooled into discipline and strength,
where character is molded.”—JR MILLER
