Horse Havens in Santa Fe

Horse Havens In Santa Fe

People who own horses care more about the barn and the horse facilities than the house! It’s a big investment to own and care for these gentle, magnificent creatures. They are also a part of the West, our culture and landscape. It feels magical when you see a horse in a field as you’re driving. And because we appreciate these big, sensitive animals, we have a wide range of options for folks who own them or just enjoy them.

There are several communities with stables for your horses, and a home for you.

Las Campanas Equestrian Center is the gold standard, with an 80+ stall facility, indoor riding arena, several outdoor riding arenas and riding trails from the facility and from homes. Lessons, boarding and care, and trail access to 68,000 acres of open land and trails is available. It is a part of the club membership. Club membership can be purchased without having a home at Las Campanas, and some homes have their own barns. Sold prices $1- $6 million.

El Dorado Community Stables have a 65-stall barn, where owners care for their equines, maintain their own paddocks, and pay their own fees. Its popular for folks who want to me hands on, caring for their animals themselves.  There is riding in the El Dorado Wilderness, within the Santa Fe National Forest and the Galisteo Basin; 2,700 acres of open space filled with trails for hikers, bikes and horses.  Sold prices $420,000 - $1.3 million

La Tierra Nueva is a luxury, gated subdivision that has a high percentage of homes with horse facilities.  The best part, the community offers direct access to BLM land for endless riding. This smaller, community is near Las Campanas, with rolling hills and homes sites are on 10+ acre lots.  One sale is 2025 for $1,415,000.

Arroyo Hondo was designed as a horse community off the Old Las Vegas Hwy. Homes sites are 5+ acre lots. The community has a system of easements along the back of lots to allow for riding and access to open space.  Many homes have a barn and enjoy access to riding and walking trails. Sales range from $1,430,000 to $1,775,000.

The Tano Road area offers fine homes and sprinkled within this corridor are neighbors and homes with barns or facilities for our larger, four legged friends. Homes are typically on 2.5 acre lots and values range from the $1 million and up. You are still very close to downtown yet can enjoy big sky and your own stable.

Hwy 14 is sited in the south of the city in the open plains, ideal for riding and horses. Many properties with barns for horses, mule, donkeys and other animals.  This area feels like the Wild West, with art studios, workshops and home businesses. Lots range from small subdivision lots to 40+ acres.  It ranges from affordable to private ranches, sales from $325,000 to $1,750,000

Tesuque and Galisteo are two villages close to Santa Fe’s City center and have homes with barns, horse facilities and access to riding. Albeit small, both areas are real communities where you will meet other horse and animal friendly folks, with restaurants or other services close by. In Tesuque, recent sales range from an equestrian estate for $4,250 to a home that sold $1.5 million. Galisteo has fine homes too, but recent properties have been under $1 million.

There are many places around Santa Fe where you can go horseback riding for a few hours or the day. It may just change your life. Learning to ride and to own a horse changed mine; I learned to listen to animals more subtly, and with greater care. To this day, nothing is more filled with freedom and joy than an open gallop on a horse. Day rides are available at Broken Saddle Riding Company offering rides in the Cerrillos Hills, Bishops Lodge Stables has a barn and offer tours for guests, and Vision Quest Western Horseback Riding & Lessons; to name a few.

In closing, I’d like to honor the Horse Shelter of Santa Fe. They rescue abused, abandoned and neglected horses throughout New Mexico. Horses get a second chance at the shelter. When our neighboring cities and states had fires, they stepped up and took in many horses. Currently they have 99 horses they are healing, giving them a new life. You can donate, adopt a horse or volunteer. You can reach the Horse Shelter at info@thehorseshelter.org

To raise funds for their orphans they also have The Horse Shelter Resale Store, located at 821 San Mateo, next to Chocolate Maven. You can find horse gear, home goods, clothing, art, jewelry and much more crammed into this jewel of a shop. You can donate your unwanted goods, or shop there before going to the mall to find unique items.
